What the heck is this?

That thing pictured is called a typewriter. It doesn’t have to be recharged. It doesn’t plug in. And it’s always available as long as you have an ink ribbon and an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. It’s been around since 1867…although Charles Thurber didn’t get a patent on it until 1868. (Sneaked a bit of history in there at you.)

This is the device I used for my entire news writing career. And it served me well. But you had to strike over or use “white out”…operations you have no need of in the computer age…to correct mistakes. And just so you know I am not stuck in the past, this is being written on a MacBook Pro with an M1 chip. In fact some of this will be voice to text which definitely would not have worked in the open bull pen of a news room…although it would have been interesting to see what was typed out for a story. -dm
